1-1 writing training for Global Witness campaign staff

Global Witness is an international campaigning organisation working to reduce natural resource-related conflict and corruption, and associated environmental and human rights abuses. In 2011, I worked with 2 members of Global Witness's campaigns team, providing 1-1 writing coaching.

The sessions looked at some of the key skills for writing ‘plain English’ – English that is clear, concise, direct and jargon-free. Building on this we looked at different ways of structuring text to create effective, audience-focused news stories, press releases, website material and longer reports – and practised finding the Global Witness ‘angle’, not just the news, in a story. We also spent time looking at ways of developing and planning report outlines, putting this into practice for current projects. In later sessions we practised some key principles for writing executive summaries, and different approaches to proof-reading. The participants made strong progress over the six week course.

Feedback included:

"The coaching has already improved my writing at work. In particular constructing sentences. I always recall Simon's lessons, exercises and tips!"

"The sessions were well prepared and logically structured. Simon adapted content to my specific experience, and was very responsive to questions and discussion of language-related issues."

"The material and content of the course was excellent and Simon was a helpful and patient teacher. I would definitely recommend this course."
